Fact Sheet

  • The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM) was founded in 1974 as a permanent endowment.

  • At the end of its 2008 fiscal year, September 30, 2008, with the help of many donors who care about the future of northeast Michigan, CFNEM had over $19.5 million in assets.

  • From its founding in 1974 to the end of its 2008 fiscal year, September 30, 2008, CFNEM has distributed more than $23.5 million to the community through grants and scholarships.

  • CFNEM is dedicated to strengthening and improving the quality of life for residents of northeast Michigan in Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, and Presque Isle Counties.

  • CFNEM is the lead foundation of three affiliates: Iosco County Community Foundation (ICCF), which serves all of Iosco County; North Central Michigan Community Foundation (NCMCF), which serves Crawford, Ogemaw, and Oscoda Counties; and Straits Area Community Foundation (SACF), which serves Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City.

  • CFNEM is governed by a board of local civic leaders from across the nine-county region served by the Community Foundation.  This board awards grants to community projects to support a wide variety of needs throughout the community such as arts and culture, the environment, community and economic development, education, and human services.

  • Working with donors, the Community Foundation helps people who care about the future of northeast Michigan match their charitable interests with a safe, wise way to invest in their community.  With permanently endowed funds, donors can be assured that their donation will continue to benefit the community for generations to come.  With an endowment fund, the principle is never spent; a portion of the income is granted out in the form of grants and scholarships.

  • CFNEM prides itself as a protector of community capital.  Community Foundation funds are invested by the Foundation's investment committee to preserve the value of the contributions received as permanent assets of the organization.  CFNEM encourages endowment-building as an effective way to meet the communities' ever-changing needs.  Over 50 nonprofit organizations are currently building endowments with CFNEM and its affiliates.
